LOWELL — He died unexpectedly on Oct. 22, four days before his 68th birthday, but the legacy that Vietnam-era veteran Roland Cartier cemented will live on for years.
When he was laid to rest Monday at Westlawn Cemetery in Lowell, in a full-military ceremony befitting his service in the U.S. Navy, his broad effect on the community was evident in the grief and the widespread support shown by veterans of all eras.
“He epitomized selfless service,” said Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sam Poulten of Cartier’s commitment to local veterans. “I can’t think of a veterans cause that he was not somehow involved with.”
His foundation “Helping Hands Veterans Club” raised money for veterans’ causes and families. “But he never made people feel as if they were receiving charity, Poulten said. “He made them see that it was payment for their contributions as servicemembers or families.”
